Last night I had a dream about Doctor Who, I won't get into the details but it gave me a really cool idea for a new Doctor Who episode. What if the Vashta Nerada of today are just poor copies of themselves. Way back in history they were destroyed, all but one. One Vashta Nerada (later the Doctor would realize there could be more than one) fell into a deep sleep. The Doctor would be faced with the choice. Kill it (next to impossible) or let it live? Because this to would be the "last" of an ancient race capable of destroying worlds. This creature would not only reside in a tree but actually is a tree. In slumber you would not be able to tell the Vashta Nerada tree apart from the others and since they are capable of sleeping for millenia even the Time Lords considered them nightmares to tell the young of Gallifrey. Like the boogie man.

I heard my name? xD But yeah, that's a pretty neat idea. Thing is, I thought the Doctor already had a choice similar to that with the Daleks - to stop them from happening.

The idea does need some work, but perhaps (I don't know how yet) we could tie it into finding out the Doctor's name. Whoever figures it out would unleash this ancient Vashta Nerada. End end of the world type situation. After all, the Doctor did say the only thing you can do is run and that's with the meek Vashta Nerada of today. There really wouldn't be a choice to let it live or die. The only option left would be to trap it somewhere or find a planet for it to live out on. Some would die, but for the greater good.

But how would they know its actually for the greater good? That's my problem with trying to justify genocide or the like - what if the Vashta Nereda wasn't as bad as everyone made it out to be? What if it could do some real good?

Personally I don't see how they could be good, but you do bring up an interesting concept. I consider this Vashta Nerada to be extremely intelligent so it's not that far fetched an idea. The problem lies with their diet. They have to eat something and that something is likely to be a someone. Considering their massive size it will be a lot of someones.

Vashta Nereda eat anything, so long as its meat, right? And they are able to devour things instantaneously - So, why not as an executioner (as executioners, since they're colonies that make shadows)? Or perhaps body disposal for sick/diseased bodies? Or cleaning up roadkill, as I believe the Doctor mentioned in the Library. If it can be reasoned with, perhaps it could also identify wanted criminals that deserve to die. By 'patrolling' shadows, it'd sure make a better defense system than anything else. Even a defense system for military purposes, perhaps. I can think of a lot of uses for Vashta Nereda :3

I like were you're going, but I don't think that the Vashta Nerada would want to eat sick/diseased or road kill. I think it would prefer live food. But say you were able to reason with it, just what are you bargaining with? What do you have to offer a Vashta Nerada?

I also highly doubt that Vashta Nerada have the same moral compass as humans. So, who's to say they would defferinciate between a criminal and a child when they're "patrolling"? And what exactly would the Vashta Nerada be defending and from whom?

A ready food source without worry that they may be destroyed, possibly. Or perhaps a viable breeding ground or . . . Well, aside from those, I'm not sure. Given enough time, and with a clear view of what they want, we could offer what the VN want. And they might not be picky about what they eat - do they even have taste buds? They're supposed to be microscopic, having a have mind, really.

They may not have the same moral compass, but . . . Sorry, for some reason I keep thinking that a sentient being/collective would not like to kill a young thing. . . Even though there are humans that do so. The defending thing. . . it's just a generalization. Maybe they could defend a bank from robbers, or a military camp from the enemies. They have shown an ability to differentiate one person from another, so uniforms shouldn't be so hard.
